Istanbul – (warsoor) – President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan will leave for a two-stop historic visit to Africa on Tuesday. Erdoğan will visit Uganda and Kenya during his trip between May 31 and June 3.
This is the first visit to the two East African countries by a Turkish head of state in three years.
The president’s office said that Erdoğan will meet with his Ugandan counterpart, Yoweri Museveni, on June 1 and will lead inter-committee meetings. On his next stop, Kenya, Erdoğan will meet with his counterpart, Uhuru Kenyatta.
Erdoğan’s high-level delegation is expected to include senior officials and prominent businessmen.
His talks will mainly center on ways to strengthen economical relations and increase cooperation in regional and international issues, the president’s office said.
In late February, President Erdoğan visited Western African counties including Nigeria, Ghana, Ivory Coast and Guinea.
Also in 2015, Erdoğan made a series of visits to Ethiopia, Djibouti and Somalia, spearheading a drive to expand Turkey’s influence on the continent.
Foreing Ministry says trade volume between Turkey and the African continent hit $23.4 billion in 2014, while bilateral trade with sub-Saharan countries has increased tenfold over the past 16 years.
